Sometimes you think you have everything you need for a recipe, then…. You pick up the container of baking powder only to find it rock hard and unusable. What do you do? Run to the store in the middle of making the recipe? Some ingredients just don’t wait well. Like butter, or whipped egg whites. So that by the time you get back, the butter is a pool in your bowl..or the egg whites you spent five minutes beating into a fluffy cloud now look more like a rain cloud flattened them.
In St. Kitts, sometimes you can’t find the item you need. Like the other day, I went to the store to get sour cream for a recipe. Not a single container of it to be found. I did come up with a substitution that worked really well, but more about that in another post.
Sometimes need can be the mother of invention. But, sometimes you just need a simple substitution you know will work. Below, you will find a chart of substitutions that will be a big help when you’re in a pinch and don’t want to run out to the store.
The list includes savory substitutions as well as substitutions for baking. I’ve tried several of them, and they work great! Consider bookmarking this to come back to as a reference, or print a copy and tape it inside one of your cupboard doors. This list originally came from Kraft Foods, so you know the substitution will make your recipe a success.
