Recently the book club I belong to read “Fifty Shades of Grey”. It was a bit of a departure from our standard reading fare, but sometimes… you just want to know what all the fuss is about. This book has been on bestsellers lists for most of the summer and really had our curiosity.
It is the story of Anastasia Steele, a young and naive literary student who interviews the rich and worldly entrepreneur Christian Grey for the school newspaper. The two become instantly infatuated with each other, and a steamy love affair develops. A perfect fairytale romance, were it not for the darker shades of Mr. Grey.
It was a fun meeting and one of the better book discussions we have had. I found a list of discussion questions for “Fifty Shades of Grey” here. I find that having questions really helps to stimulate discussion with our book club. Once you get us going, we can go on discussing forever.
As usual, I tried to tie the food to the theme of the book. There were several lines from the book that were repeated often. So, when we had our meeting to discuss the book, I decided to create cupcake toppers with these sayings.
The cupcakes themselves were a strawberry banana flavor. I filled them with a strawberry filling, and dubbed it the “red room of pleasure” inside the cupcake. I then frosted them with “vanilla” frosting and topped that with a strawberry, a cage made of chocolate, and my newly created cupcake toppers. Trust me, once you read the book this will all make sense.
I cut open one of the cupcakes to be sure the filling was the way I wanted it. I thought it had a pretty good cake to filling ratio. The tube filled 24 cupcakes when filled.
I had a lot of fun with this project. If you would like to make your own “Fifty Shades of Grey” cupcakes, below is a link to the toppers I created. I printed them on card stock, cut them out, and used transparent tape to attach them to toothpicks.
Over the last few months I have started following a gluten-free diet. The cupcakes pictures are gluten and dairy free. I will be doing a post with the recipe for the cupcakes soon and will update this page with a link to the recipe. For now, I just thought it would be fun to share the cupcake toppers with you.
We had some other fun foods at the party as well including a Beeten Pink Pasta Salad, Licorice Whips bound by a cable tie, “Sub”marine sandwiches, and a smoked oyster spread (for the aphrodisiac reputation). Oh! and wine! Seemed like they were always drinking wine in that book.
Even if you aren’t part of a book club, I think you could have a lot of fun with a girls night party based on the book. Attendees that have read the book shouldn’t be hard to find.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the free printables. Laters Baby!
